Low-Bake Powder Coating for Aluminium:

Benefits, Trade-offs and When It Makes Sense

Over recent years there has been significant pressure to reduce the cost of powder coating and reduce its environmental impact across the industry, whilst at the same time retaining existing colour and finish options. Powder coating powder manufacturers have responded to this by developing new low-bake powder coatings.

What are Low-Bake Powders?

Low-bake powder coatings cure at lower temperatures than conventional powders. Where standard powder coatings require 180-200°C to cure, low-bake powders will cure at between 125-160°C. This small temperature change can deliver significant benefits to projects including reduced cost and time saving.

At C&O we are already working with several suppliers of low-bake powders including Interpon, Axalta, and IGP whose powders deliver comparable performance to standard powders that don’t compromise durability or finish quality.

Using lower temperatures means that curing time can be between 8-30 minutes depending on the temperature and specific powder used which also helps to reduce thermal stress on pre-coated or anodised substrates especially for sensitive aluminium applications.

The Cost Advantage

Industry research from Interpon and Axalta has shown that a low-bake powder coating will reduce energy consumption by between 20-30% compared to standard curing. By reducing energy use, particularly in the curing ovens, this can deliver significant savings on running costs.

Faster curing and cooling also means quicker turnaround times for coated components using a low-bake process allowing higher production rates without compromising quality.

Whilst low-bake powders are currently more expensive than traditional ones this can be offset against reduced energy use and faster production making projects overall cheaper to complete.

Environmental Impact

For many of C&O’s customers sustainability and environmental impact is very important so using low-bake powder coating with lower energy consumption means reduced CO2 emissions and a smaller carbon footprint.

In addition, because low-bake powder coating is solvent-free it is more environmentally friendly than wet paint systems which use solvents making them a natural choice for projects with a greater requirement for sustainability.

Where Low-Bake Works Well

Low-bake powders are ideal for most architectural aluminium extrusions, industrial aluminium components and high-volume aluminium production and are generally available in the same finishes and colours as standard powders.

The C&O team can advise on the best solution depending on the project but low-bake powder coating is not recommended for harsh environmental or industrial conditions currently.

For most architectural and industrial aluminium applications, modern low-bake formulations offer the same protection and capabilities as standard powder coating.

Why This Matters: Choice and Flexibility

Some projects need low-bake and others demand traditional standard-cure powder for specific performance requirements. The difference is knowing which is right for your project.

C&O operates two separate, independently configured, coating lines which means we can run both low-bake and standard cure at the same time if required. This gives us operational flexibility, higher output capability, and significant cost savings across the business.

Our two lines also means you get the coating specification your project requires, without compromise on colour choice or aesthetic options.

The Supplier Landscape

Many of the leading powder suppliers now offer low-bake ranges including:

  • Interpon Low-E and Interpon D Low-E
  • Axalta Alesta LE and Axalta Alesta IP Antigassing
  • IGP-RAPID complete 88 and the IGP-DURA pol range

C&O are accredited applicators for all the leading powder coating suppliers and offer low-bake and standard solutions which can be tailored to customer needs.

Making the Decision

Low-bake powders make genuine financial and environmental sense for many aluminium coating applications but the right decision depends on your specific project requirements, not pressure to choose one approach over another.

When looking at low-bake powder coating options we advise customers to consider several factors including:

  • What are your project’s performance requirements?
  • Is sustainability important for the project?
  • Where will it be installed?

The C&O technical team will advise on the best options for your project and help you explore finish options and colours available. To talk to a member of the team about low-bake powder coating please contact us for more information.
