Colour Trends and Textures in Aluminium Powder Coating

20 March 2026

At C&O we’ve been applying architectural aluminium powder coating finishes across commercial and public sector projects for over 40 years. In that time, both trends and finishes have constantly evolved, this gives us a unique insight into which finishes continue to perform years after installation. In this article we’re exploring how colour and texture choices have developed and what those choices mean in practice.

When you specify aluminium for a project, colour and texture are never purely aesthetic decisions. They influence how the building is perceived, how the surface ages, and how well the finish performs over time. The right powder coating choice at the start can ensure a finish has the same impact in the future as it did today.

Powder Coating Colour – it’s a long term decision

More often than not colour is a design choice, specified by the architects to make their creation stand out from the crowd but when installed the external environment can influence how visually stable it will remain over time.

Because of this over the years we’ve see natural tones such as greys, charcoals, and muted metallics being more widely used across architectural aluminium. These colours integrate well with glass, stone, and concrete and hide surface contamination better than darker tones. They also help elevate brighter trims as an architectural feature.

Darker colours on the other hand, which are often used to create contrast, are more widely used for framing or feature elements but require more cleaning especially in harsher environments with lighter colours used over larger areas where consistency is a key factor.

Gloss Powder Coating – adding impact

Gloss levels really can make an impact on how aluminium appears once it’s installed and we’ve seen how tastes have changed over the years.

Matt and low sheen options help reduce glare and are often used as a wrapping rather than as a focal point for the design.

High gloss powder coating, although less commonplace than matt, can significantly enhance visual appearance. We’ve seen this on projects like Blakely Fire Station, where the red façade forms part of the overall design but is not the main focal point.

Textured Powder Coating – a practical choice

Textured powder coating is commonly specified for practical reasons.

Fine textured powder coat finishes can be used to help disguise minor substrate variation and handling marks which makes them suitable for installation across complex projects and where it is exposed to harsher environments where wear is more likely.

Although we still see smooth finishes all the time at C&O the choice between smooth and textured reflects the installation environment, potential handling and how it will be viewed once installed.

Metallic and Reflective Finishes

Metallic powder coating finishes reflect light differently depending on orientation and viewing angle, which makes them suitable for feature elements and architectural details.

These finishes require a high quality application process to maintain consistency to avoid variation across panels and when applied correctly, metallic finishes deliver visual interest without compromising durability.

At C&O we see metallic finishes being commonly used on window and entrance surrounds and even than entire façades.

Natural Metal and Anodised-Look Finishes

In the past few years, we have seen increases in demand for finishes that replicate anodised or natural metal appearances. This replicates the anodised effect at a significantly lower cost and delivers a more uniform effect without losing performance or visual effect.

Because of this demand, powder coating manufacturers have responded by providing a greater range of effects and colours with improved colour consistency and durability compared to traditional anodising. These finishes allow aluminium to achieve the desired aesthetic while benefiting from the protective properties of powder coating.

Natural Stone Effect Finishes

Alongside the growth in natural metal finishes, at C&O we are seeing increasing interest in powder coating finishes that replicate the appearance of natural stone.

Natural stone effect powder coatings are designed to mimic materials such as granite, limestone, concrete, and terrazzo. They combine multiple pigments and surface textures to create depth and variation, rather than a flat or uniform colour. When applied to aluminium, they allow designers to achieve a stone-like aesthetic without the weight or installation complexity associated with real stone.

These finishes are often specified where designers want to soften large metal surfaces or integrate aluminium more closely with masonry, brick, or concrete elements elsewhere on a building.

From a performance perspective, natural stone effect finishes retain the protective benefits of powder coating. When combined with the correct pre-treatment, they provide corrosion resistance, colour stability, and durability suitable for external environments.

How Environment Shapes Finish

The environment in which aluminium is installed has a direct influence on how colour and texture perform. Coastal locations, industrial areas, and high UV exposure increase the risk of premature degradation if finishes are not correctly specified.

In these conditions, colour choice, texture, and pre-treatment must work together and enhanced preparation processes such as Qualicoat Seaside improve corrosion resistance and support longer service life.

The most effective finish specifications are based on a clear understanding of use, environment, and expectations.

When selecting a finish, specifiers should consider several key factors including:

  • Installation location
  • How visible it will be once installed
  • Cleaning and maintenance requirements
  • Expected lifetime

At C&O, we work with customers to ensure finishes meet both design and performance requirements. Early discussion leads to better outcomes and fewer compromises later.

By aligning colour, texture, environment, and process, powder coating continues to deliver durable and flexible solutions for modern architecture. If you would like to discuss finish options for your next project, our technical team is available to help.
