ARCHITECT WANTED FOR LONDON’S SATIRICAL GARDEN BRIDGE ALTERNATIVES15 July 2015
A SATIRICAL IDEAS COMPETITION HAS BEEN LAUNCHED SEEKING ALTERNATIVE ‘FOLLIES’ FOR THOMAS HEATHERWICK’S GARDEN BRIDGE SITE IN LONDON
Backed by artist Will Jennings, the ‘Folly for London’ contest is looking for ‘alternative and equally absurd designs’ for the riverside site.
According to the brief: ‘We welcome entries from established and unknown artists, big-name architects or unknown students, adults and children, Londoners and outsiders.’
The document continued: ‘Your idea could be a monumental folly which serves no purpose other than ego & waste; a coin tower made up of six-billion penny pieces, a towering statue of Joanna Lumley and Boris Johnson embracing or a wind turbine which turns against the wind showering gold dust over tourists.
‘Perhaps you could mash together different functions which aren’t suitable for the site; a penthouse bus garage or a petting zoo abattoir. Let your creativity run wild.’
Submissions must include two A4 or A3 sheets and a short description.
Judges include architecture critic Owen Hatherley and Green Party leader Natalie Bennett who will also select the winner of a ‘best greenwash’ special prize.
The deadline for entries is midnight on Friday 28 August.
